Green is Growing @ The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale

Plastic Anyone?

In the US, 2,000,000 plastic beverage bottles are used EVERY 5 MINUTES!!!

At The Art Institute, we have recycled over 100 gallons of bottles from our “Plastic Bottle Collection Cage” in the Main Lobby. It is still half full! Keep adding to it!

A Successful Earth Week 2009

AiFL celebrated this year’s Earth Week with a bang! Bake sales, recycled paper-making, “Project Recycle” fashion show, Carpool events and a great presentation by Serge Atherwoord on Sustainability and its Creative Future. We also demonstrated “How Much Plastic Do We Really Need?” in the Main Lobby. The installation has been motivating to all, encouraging passers-by to throw their own plastic in!

Thank you to all who helped in organizing this week’s events, with a special shout-out to Suzanne DePetro and Natalie Lara for raising awareness with the plastic collection and for taking charge of Wednesday’s paper-making. Thanks to all other supporters: Alicia Nestor, Karen Nir, Val Vigil, Scott LeBlanc, Arlene Wites, and everyone who has chipped in with plastic to recycle!

Recyclables vs. Non-Recyclables

Students and Employees,

Did you know that if ONE non-recyclable item contaminates an AiFL blue bin, the entire bin’s contents are sent to the dump?

Recycling is not only about reducing the load on the landfills, it’s about changing a culture and modifying old habits. Though it can be a difficult task, it is important for everyone on campus to lend a hand, so that little-by-little being green becomes second nature.

That’s why it is critical for The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale’s employees and students to be familiar with the rules of recycling and understand what can and cannot be tossed in the blue bins.

Things that CAN be recycled:

cyclogood1

  • Aluminum Cans
  • Brown Paper Bags
  • Cardboard
  • Catalogs, Magazines, and Phone Books
  • Chipboard (Cereal Boxes, Shoe Boxes, etc.)
  • Colored Paper
  • Computer Paper
  • Envelopes
  • Glass Bottles and Jars (Without the Caps)
  • Newspapers and Junk Mail
  • Plastic Bottles and Jugs (Without the Caps)
  • Tin and Steel Cans
  • Empty Aerosol Cans
  • White Ledger Paper

Things that CANNOT be recycled:

cyclobad

  • Aluminum Foil
  • Auto Glass or Ceramics
  • Batteries
  • Film Canisters
  • Food
  • Light Bulbs
  • Painted Wood
  • Paper Towels and Napkins
  • Plastic Grocery Bags
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Porcelain
  • Styrofoam
  • Treated Wood
  • Wrappers

A good rule of thumb to follow is: If you don’t know, in the trash can it goes!”

Remember, it isn’t easy being green, but a little bit goes a long way for our school, for our community, and for our planet. Please do your part and spread the word.

Congratulations, students and employees – we did it!

The school is officially recycling and the Kick-Off party was a hit!

Special thanks to Suzanne DePetro for organizing the event and leading the recycling team, Jamie Furman-Saralegui and Natalie Lara for their research and hard work, our Facilities team for realizing our goals, the Green Committee, the Student Green Club, and Emerging Green Builders for their help and support, Gillian Sang for creating ‘Cyclo,’ Jennifer Rodriguez for bringing him to life, Trina Nicklas for hosting a fabulous paper-making project, Ryan Brissett for energizing the crowd with the groovy tunes, the AiFL Fashion Club for hosting Drop/Swap/Shop, the Communications Department for passionately promoting this cause, and to all employees and students for recycling.

The event was created to raise awareness and educate the employee and student body on recycling. We raised $36, thanks to Christy Denton, Sheila Getman, and Vicky Kennedy, who baked up some tasty treats – the cash will feed the school’s “Green for Green” fund.

Hello everyone!

You’ve probably noticed the new blue bins that are beginning to populate the campus.

These receptacles are no longer a place to dispose of trash, food, and goo – they’re for recycling!

(Check out what you can and can’t recycle by clicking on the link)

We will officially be launching our new recycling program on Monday, February 2.  …but, by all means, go ahead and begin today!

Join us for the party in the Main Building Lobby on Monday (2/2) from 11am to 2pm.

We will have info, music, fun/games, baked treats and more!
Our Drop/Swap/Shop travelling consignment shop will be available and on campus for the clothes you no longer wear and any new ones you’d like to pick-up.

To show your support on Monday by wearing your favorite green gear and we’ll see you at the party.

Thank you for your effort in making AiFL a greener place and stay tuned for more info to come!
